Programmes
Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) is a powerful tool that enables pupils to draw many learning points in a single programme or activity. It makes for innovative and relevant learning, for each trip out of the boundaries of the classroom brings the child into the current and real environment. It prepares the pupils for real life experiences and challenges. The bond forged, and the skills and values learnt through such unique outdoor experiences will serve them well in the world they live in. The broad nature of OAE enables it to weave seamlessly into different facets of education be it English, Mathematics, Science, and especially character development. The N3 Cluster’s OAE programme is multi-faceted, multi disciplinary and multi-activity based.
At Hougang Primary School where the N3 Cluster COE for OAE resides, the OAE’s programmes are conducted at two levels, namely the Core Programme that is compulsory and graded across all levels during PE lessons, camps and post-exam activities, and the Non-core or Elective Programme that caters to the pupils from both the Outdoor Adventure Activities Club (ODAC), one of the school’s niche CCAs as well as pupils who show a high level of interest and affinity in outdoor adventure (See “Hougang Primary School OAE Programmes”). These experiences allow the development of self-confidence, leadership skills, courage, survival skills and personal relationships away from family or school environments.
The OAE Centre of Excellence will endeavour to not only offer excellent training, guidance and resources in the area of OAE. It will also serve as the focal point of OAE research capability and be well positioned to become a centre for innovation in the N3 cluster for OAE.
It will be an exciting initiative geared towards the provision of an OAE programme designed to mould character through the outdoors. To this end, its main objectives are:
~ To raise the profile of OAE
~ To showcase OAE in the N3 cluster
~ To provide opportunities for N3 pupils to undergo OAE
~ To develop N3 staff competencies in OAE
~ To spearhead development of engaging teaching-learning programmes through OAE
~ To develop links and collaborations with international organizations
